From CONSAS to AfricaGEO
Building on the proud tradition of Conference of Southern African Surveyors (CONSAS) the organising committee is proud to announce that the 1st AfricaGEO Conference that will be held in Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from the 30th May to 2nd June 2011. AfricaGEO is being organized by the South African Geomatics Associations, and enjoys the full support of, PLATO, GISSA, Hydrographic Society of South Africa, Institute of Mining Surveyors of South Africa, the Association of Aircraft Operating Companies and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.
The first CONSAS conference was held in Durban in 1961. The momentum and success of CONSAS ensured that it was held at least every four years since its inception. The last CONSAS, branded “Geomatics Steps into the Third Millennium” was also held in Cape Town in March 2001. Due to capacity problems no CONSAS took place since 2001 and eventually SAGI Western Cape (and affiliated associations) elected to take up the challenge.
It was decided to rebrand to AfricaGEO, which will be a continuation of CONSAS with a domination of presentations and papers but it will have a great exhibition and stamp its claim as the Geomatics exhibition on the continent. Although not intended to an annual conference, it may turn out to be bi-annual. This would be appropriate seeing that Africa is in all likelihood entering a century of high growth and infrastructural development. The profits of the conference will be used for promoting the Geomatics profession and industry.
AfricaGEO theme
The theme of the AfricaGEO 2011 is “Developing Geomatics for Africa”, with an emphasis on the development of Geomatics (as an industry / technology) in the African context. This brings up technological development, as well as social development of the industry to suit the needs of, and that is appropriate to Africa.
